How are you doing? ...

Here I staged a sit down for a PIC (+:

First I must WARN you that I'm not a writer, I can manage your network/server environment and develop web applications using PHP. So, if you notice a [sic] email me. Thanks

In my office, where I administrator the network infrastructure with 3 remote sites and a 900 user base complex. I'm responsible for 3 Baynetwork routers, around 100 10/100MB BayStack switches and a 100+ 10MB hubs. When one of the 13 subnets or core network devices drop off the network map, I get called first.

I also play a role in the adminstration of about 30 core infrastructure servers ranging from Compaq s. I have a strong background in server adminstration Linux, FreeBSD, nt, Netware.

I've worked in an educational environment where we had a student user base of over 20,000, here I managed user account on VMS clusters, inplemented Linux servers when you had to hack Slackware, and managed nt on the Intel/Alpha platform, it bites on both... However 3.51 was a very stable but the decided to speed it up... huh

A lot of the tools I use to manage my network areource, NMAP, Cheop, MRTG, NTOP, Iptraf, ucd-snmputil (snmpwalk, snmpget), npadmin and a number of others. I even developed a couple of network tools using PHP and MySQL as the database backend.

One of the applications was a very quick hack. I told you that I also help manage servers, some of theses servers are Netware.

Sometime we get MAC address popping up on our server consoles causing an annoyance. So I set down and used my ability to get whatever information I wanted from a Baynetwork router, grabbed the data relating to IP - MAC address that have passed through my router processed the data and inserted it into a MySQL database table and called it GetIps. (Available for download)

As a result of that quick hack I expanded the code and started to gather snmp data from all the devices on my network are aware of the protocol. Called it PHP/SNMP Network Management Tool which is available for download.

This tool allows me to:

Query ANY snmp aware device for uptime, location, contact and in/out octets Update location, contact
Gather IP and MAC address of host passing through my routers
Store data related to various network devices (Port info, last location, contact, last uptime)
Gather data on intervals for historial usage

These applications where developed at home and tested in my work enviroment...

Off the clock I spend alot of my time sitting at my Linux box hacking PHP/SQL/Perl/sh scripts, I've developed a number ofource applications that where developed with Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP in mind. When I'm not coding, I'm an advocateource technology and try to get involved whenever I can.

Being able to manage my own server has allowed me to increase the number of people I can help find an alternative solution to the costly closed binary. I offer free email support, however I'm not interested in getting to many email request from a single source in a single day or two. But if you have a question post it to one of my discussion forums a http://hlug.org and if it's PHP related. Check out http://PCCS-Linux.COM

enough of the rambling, I hope that you learn something by using my site as a resource.

Thanks... Chauncey Thorn
